How to Build A Girl (2020)

How to Build a Girl (2019) - IMDb

Where to start with this film?
This film was written by the prodigy that is Caitlin Moran, not a prodigy like Freddie Mercury but a literary prodigy. A person whose words make any situation feel like it could happen at home and you're experiencing it with them.
Set in the harsh post-Thatcherist Wolverhampton city of North England you see a teenage whose words flow from her like a running tap. The main character played by the American actress Beanie Feldstein is a vibrant northerner in the 90s seeking an outlet and finding it in the intoxicating of watching and reviewing bands. With a vibrant red hairstyle, a cabaret-style outfit and her pen and notepad Beanie steal the screen with a character that I would have loved to be friends with at school. To be a product of that circumstance but finding some starlight to raise herself up, we need all of this.
The songs sung by Alfie Allen adds to the tone brought by the early 1990s and 1980s music scene and with musical cameos from the Manic Street Preachers you may watch the film waiting for an instruction manual on how to fit in but you leave with an added emotion and vague instructions (as if they were in in french but the pictures can help you anyway).

Despite the book of which the film is based was released six years ago we can't but hope that Caitlin Moran has enough words to encapsulate similar characters as I feel I am not alone in saying these "real" characters allow similarities for the average person and this is what movies should be showing.
Not the pristine white, blonde and skinny girl who has it hard because she is dating the wrong hot person.
We need stories about the working class, the non- average body size, the non-white person.
So I invite movie and tv companies to find books that exhibit stories of people whom need stories to be told and make them into films. They don't have to be titanic sized blockbusters but as you have the money to promote important messages in the unsure times use it wisely.

This all leads me to give one recommendation:
For any girl, any feminist, any person who is currently finding out who they are, take note because the moral of finding yourself is expressed clearly at the epilogue of this movie. Make errors and learn from mistakes, or just carry make them and wear them on the brim of your awesome hat because in the end all of these things build yourself.
As a twenty-something student, I am still trying to figure themself out and I wish this book had been known to me when I was younger as it may have helped me accept myself. I write this while listening to Lady Gaga's "Born this way" and can't help feel this sums up the movie, it doesn't fit the culture or the time of the film, however, it sums up the fight for people who don't have the privilege as the film said. Yet, as we live only our one life we shouldn't waste that privilege with not living our moments to the extent. Though maybe not the extent lived by the alter ego of the main character, Dolly Wilde.

High Note (2020)

The High Note (2020) - IMDb
                                           https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9308382/

During this uneasy time of dread left by the Corona outbreak, this film has shed a little ray of light on my monotonous life. Tracee Ellis Ross gives a performance which seems to truly reflect her life off of the screen; a woman who is famous and relies little on men. This both in her character and her real-life makes her a role model to anyone who wants to confirm to everyone else and themselves that being alone does not mean you are lonely and it is okay.

The soundtrack alone would be a reason as to why you want to watch this film featuring original music for the film as well as songs by Sam Cooke (covered at various points throughout the movie), Phantom Planet (used as a meet-cute) and the legendary Aretha Franklin. However, this does not lay a finger on the soul produced when Tracee starts singing. I tend to determine good music by goosebumps or gut feelings and I got both. It barely took a sec of singing to give a taste of awe in my mouth and a feeling of intoxication made by those notes. If Tracee were to make music, with the crackle and pop given by vinyl I surely would believe that Tracee was an original soul train singer. But along with Tracee, there were the amazing songs sung by Kelvin Harrison Jr. The evolution of his character's singing character may be mimicking his very own as surely with a performance like this we would be asking for a demo very soon.

As a movie this was what I wanted for a music film:
- There was a harmonising of characters (not just musically) which helped with the magnitude of emotions felt on screen making us feel them too.
- Not defining to a single genre. Those looking for romance would find this between Kelvin Harrison Jr and Dakota Johnson making a connection needed to tick this box yet, it would not fully clarify the film to be a romance. The same goes for if the film were to be classed as a comedy or a drama. This film is a happy blended of necessary labels need to make this film interesting and to add texture to the plot.
- It is not totally predictable. Some of it is predictable however, there are definite twists that would not be obvious unless you were watching the film under an easter egg magnifying glass.

Overall, I would recommend this film (and did as soon as I finished it) to anyone wanting a joy-filling film for people interested in nearly any type of film. With cameos from the likes of Eddie Izzard and Diplo and including minor roles from June Raphael and Bill Pullman. This is a big strive for highlighting race, gender and age inequality seen in Hollywood and the music industry as well as society as a whole. This film is deliverance for multiple voices needed to be heard and the women who wrote and directed this film hit them all on the head, so now we just need to listen (and watch).

Thor: Ragnorok (2017)

I am a large fan of Comic Books which you might have already gathered from my previous entireties, and so far I have seen every Thor film at the cinema and why should the third Thor film be any different. If it has a Chris as the actor and is a Marvel film I will definatly watch it.
And, it was definatly the correct choice ingoing to see it, I was pretty dubious over seeing on the movie poster that Thor did not have long hair anymore however, he still remained the sexy god of Thunder which we all know and love.
The premise of the film is quite a direct follow on from Thor 2 in the fact that Loki didn't actually die and he banished Odin and essentially took his place, enjoying being a trickster to which he is essentially the god of.
But, hold on a moment their not so perfect family might be more of a less perfect family after-all as it seems that one female relative has come for destruction and will not leave or let anyone get in her way, to get to that eventual aim: the destruction of Val Halla.
With the introduction of Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson, best known for Veronica Mars and Dear White People) as a girl with a mission to level up in a world based on meritocracy and with a ruler who obviously is more Machiavelli than Machiavelli himself (Jeff Goldblum, best known for Jurassic Park) and the return of some familiar characters.
Enjoying the Easter Eggs directing to another Marvel films and the end-credit clip, made it even more special than most Marvel films yet.

Plus, to sum it up there is a definite edge of the 80s from colour schemes and outfits to the clothing and makeup, makes a brilliant accreditation to the amazing director Taika Waititi (Best know for What We Do In The Shadows).

I rate this amazing film 17/20.

War of the Planet of the Apes (2017)

If you haven't watched the previous two films you may miss a few things but not many the best recap can be said mainly by this quote by Ernest Hemmingway
"All things truly wicked start from innocence"
except with the knowledge that it wasn't innocence which carried on the war between man and ape. There were truly cryable moments and hilarious moment with introduction of a new Ape only named in self-reference as "Bad Ape" as that is what humans used to shout at him when he was in the zoo.
For those who wondered if the Apes were using proper sign-language like I did at the start, they are in fact using ASL (American Sign Language) to which I started to learn despite being English (picked it up from American TV shows) which to me felt a great achievement as I understood quite a bit of the conversations between Apes.
With Woody Harrelson being the featuring villain made it a new attitude I felt towards him as an actor as he tends to play the same or similar role and by taking this role he definatley shows that he is bridging out a bit.

I rate this terrific drama a 17/20.

Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)

Well, me and my siblings all went to this and well me and my sister-in-law thoroughly enjoyed the topless version of Tom Holland.
With this reboot there comes a new actor as mentioned before, a new sidekick which often didn't really occur before in the Andrew Garfield reboot and the original Tobey Maguire trilogy. However, you do see a nice plot set-up for the next film which sees Zendaya whose character is Michele reveal her nickname is actually MJ. Which previously was played by Kirsten Dunst.
This time Michael Keaton plays the villain, instead of the good guy (See Batman 1989), Tony Stark plays the replacement father figure like Uncle Bens should be (not the rice company) and extremely young Aunt May.
I love the special effects, the new Spidey suit gadgets and explotions.
I rate this a 18/20.

Power Rangers (2017)

I might be biased in this but I thought the film was really good. However, as a child I was not allowed to watch the TV show as my brother after watching it proceeded to try being a power ranger on the playground and to be honest I did the same with Totally Spies, anyway.

So this to me seemed a really awesome origin story and to be honest the Red Ranger was pretty cute and that was a hilarious prank which he set up. Elizabeth Banks plays Rita Repulsa brilliantly to which a role I had imagined would not suit her as she plays often quite preppy characters.

For those who don't know,
The film follows the plot of a group of five teenagers who all end up detention together, for various reasons, and eventually all meet up at a quarry, fall in, find Power Ranger quartz and come into powers which take time to truly master.

I rate this film a 17/20.

Before I Fall (2017)

When you combine Groundhog Day with If I Stay you get this film. This film follows the dramatic day in the life Samantha Kingston who dies at the end of each day or if she prevents her own death then another girl dies and so everytime she wakes up in the same exact day as she started. So it doesn't matter if she decides to be goody-two shoes, a promiscuous bad girl or a girl who loves her friends or a girl who loves her family it will always end up the same way.

So how does she get out of this waking nightmare? This is essentially the plot line which at each new day seems to carry a new dramatic edge that seems only positive in how it will be able to reduce you to tears. Zoey Deutch is the perfect actress and is able to truly show how a character can change and grow for the better in 1 day.

I rate this tear jerker of a film 18/20.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)

So when Alice thought it might have been able to make an agreement in Retribution with Wesker but, it seems that was all a lie. And so she carried on with her Lone Ranger Routine until with a mission set by the Red Queen to go to Racoon City and find the real anti-virus.

However, along the way she may be betrayed, she may find out some absolutely shocking truths but in the end will she be able to stay alive because she was infected with the T-Virus.

The stunts were so extreme that the Stunt actress for Milla ended up without an arm when she did a motorbike jump and ended up with nerve damage. I have watched all of the other films and I must say that it could have been better.

I rate this film 14/20.

Lion (2016)

This tells the true story of a boy, Saroo, who got lost when separated from his brother and he ended up 1500km from his home in Kolkata, a place that he didn't speak the language and where grown men tried to kidnap him. But, eventually he was put in an orphanage until Sue (Played by Nicole Kidman) and her husband, from Australia, adopted him. Then, they adopt his brother who has rage and self-harms. Then, twenty years late you see Saroo as an adult (played by Dev Patel) going to school to be a hotel manager, he meets Lucy (Played by Rooney Mara) which intern endears him to find his family using Google Earth. The film which is dramatic throughout , which did make me cry, but, when watching it with my mum there wasn't any subtitles, and so we watched a good hour of the film just pondering as to what they may have been saying in Hindu and Bengali, it wasn't until after we realised we forgot to press that button.
I rate this film a 17/20.

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

This remake of the classic Disney princess film is what was needed for young girls to aspire to a strong independent woman, the strong undertones between La Feou and Gaston and some otheres make the film have a lighter heart when in the face of mena characters such as Gaston. TO which Luke Evans triumphantly played it in a way which made it a convincing narcissism and near psychopathy. Emma Watson's Belle truly shows what was mssing with the Disney Princesses, women can be intelligent as well as beautiful which has always been a strong supporting feature of her personality  to whihc made her my favourite Princess as a child, that and the DIsney channel program 'Sing me a story with Belle'.
Ewan Mcgrgor definatley added to the film in creating one of the best song sequences in CGI and Real picture combination with 'Be our Guest' and Stephen Chbosky, writter of 'Perks of being a wallflower' wrote the film in such as way as to not to deivate fromt he original that much howeve,r with more tension and dramatic that I ended up crying when the servants devolved into objects as well as when I thought Gaston had got Adam AKA The Beast for good. With songs sung so well that I was singing them for the next couple of days I totally commend Disney for this some-what masterpiece.

I rate this film a 17/20.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 (2017)

If you haven't seen the first film all you would be missing is a man who can hold an Infinity stone without blowing up, a group of unlikeliest characters getting together and forming the Guardians.

This time you see the adorable Baby Groot dancing to Mr Blue Sky - E.L.O. and you see some absolutely mind blowing CGI which make it seem so realistic and colour it just looks like you are tripping of some really Groovy psychedelic. The new Marvel formula for a brilliant film is clearly evident here, a wrong was done, the joining together of probably unlikely characters, a kidnapping of a character leads therefore to an epic battle scene with yet again an incredibly empowering soundtrack including 'The chain'- Fleetwood Mac, 'Fox on the run'- Sweet and 'My sweet lord'- George Harrison.
Chris Pratt looks hotter in this film, Gamora's hair still makes me more jealous than Mary Kate of Ashley, Drax still has his annoying attitude to which allows him to take most things literally or to find the most peculiar things hilarious and Rocket still is Baby groot's translator yet still like to walk the line of Ethics.

I rate this brilliant film a 8/10.

XXX 3: Return of Xander Cage (2017)

If you have watched the previous two films then you would understand it is basically Samuel L Jackson hiring random criminals who like to do daring stunts, flirt/sleep with many women and have supped-up cars.

And with this film there is a difference of doing daring stunts, flirting/sleeping with many women, having a really awesome team and having supped-up cars only at the end. It is very easily to be compared to the Fast and Furious franchise not just for the layout of the film but also it has Vin Diesel's appalling acting in it again. Nina Dobrev and Ruby Rose give it the much need women who were just as powerful or better than the men on the team.

Yet, this time there is a device which can drop satellites on random people and they need to get to the device before the other team can use it. But, on the way they may drop some marines out of a plane, play Russian roulette with a grenade, make subtle lesbian jokes (thank you Ruby Rose for this) and show that sex really could get you many things.

I rate this film a 16/20.

Fallen (2017)

When the angels fell from heaven it was because their in support of Lucifer or because they hadn't decided what side they wanted to be on. But, one angel fell in love with a human and so he was cursed to live for eternity never ageing yet, she would die and every 17 year they would meet, fall and love and the circle would restart.

But, this time the circle may not be the same. Luce has always been told she is crazy and being stuck in a institutional school that's what they keep on telling her after all she did accidently set a fire which may or may not have killed a person. So when she meets Daniel she cant help but feel a pull towards him and feel like she has met him before.

Jeremy Irvine was definitely the correct choice to play Daniel as he can be aloof, attractive and dangerously mysterious. And well, curiosity killed the cat. With the residents on campus revealing their true selves it is becoming even more dangerous for Luce and any bystander around when the battle of Light and Dark were to be finalised.

This was in fact a book adaptation from a novel by the same name authored by critically acclaimed Lauren Kate.

I rate this film a 16/20.

Fifty shades darker (2017)

So if you have watched the first film or read the books then you would know that this is choca-block full of kink. So when this is lacking a certain amount it is slightly disappointing, though there are still spanking, Kegel balls and a spreader bar.
This time it is filled with more action packed moments with large builds up of tension, not only in the bedroom. If you want to see the right balance between a guy with anger issues, a messed up childhood and people who have trouble with understanding the word "No!".

In my opinion it is much better than the first film as it is focusing on filmography rather than the sex but I guess Sam Taylor-Johnson is trying to getting in to the sexy groove.

I rate this film 17/20.

Bridget Jones' Baby (2016)

So I am an avid fan of Bridget Jones' Diary movies and well this film I feel has well and truly come through. And so through the suggestion of the title, Bridget gets pregnant. However, who is the father? Based on the previous films it could be Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) or Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), however it could possibly be the new guy Jack (Grey's Anatomy's, Patrick Dempsey)?

With one of the most comedic performances by Emma Thompson, hilarious innuendos between Bridget and her usual gang with some new members yet there was a disappointment in the fact that there was no famous Mark Darcy fight in water.

I rate this film a 17/20.

Guantamera VS Summer Lovin'

I know both songs are quite old however, I am quite young so I have only noticed it recently. But the main tune for the song 'Summer Lovin' ' in the film Grease near enough comes from the base line of the song 'Guantamera' by Jose Marti.

It's weird because all songs eventually are made from the same three chords but this kind of sounds like Americans trying to steal Latin music.

James Arthur VS The Script

Have you listened to 'Say you won't let go' by James Arthur, yet? Because I have, accidently when sitting in my media class, and I can tell you the base line, chords and rhythm of lyrics to the tempo near enough match 'The man who can't be moved' by The Script.
I'm not saying that it is a cover but, the last time James Arthur made a good hit it wasn't his own song and now it seems that that is the case yet again.

Hail, Caesar! (2016)

So all Cohen Brothers films fit into to one of two categories, Hit or Miss. And this film even though there were certain scenes that had pertinency to the time it was set or it was just slightly humorous. However, the majority of the film was extremely dry , e.g. more than the Sahara when in concerns with the jokes, the acting, the plot. The parts which were funniest was Jonah hill and Scarlett Johansson or the communists kidnapping George Clooney.
As the film was set during the 50s some of the arid plot is reflecting what cinema was like or what it wasn't like especially with Ralph Fiennes being 'Laurence Lorenz' type of actor perhaps like Laurence Olivier.

I rate this film a 7/20.

Suicide squad (2016)

Now, there was an absolutely massive hype over the past couple of years which lead to massively high expectations. However, I believe that it was not followed through with. Those who have watched all of the trailers may have felt misled to what the plot unravelled. No the joker is not really the protagonist of the story. You can definitely tell many of the joker's scenes were removed for the final cut but, I believe he still had enough to interpret his characters arch within the movie.

You know what I did notice, half of the Rick Flag and Enchantress scenes were cut and I believe that made it worse for them as well. And what is with Slipknot? He just suddenly appears and then suddenly dies. Why even invoke him in the plot?? I know why. He was a cast and plot filler, just to make up two extra minutes and so Jai Courtney and Viola Davis have a couple more lines so they get paid the same as everyone else.

The film still had a good amount of explosions for the adrenaline fans, very libidinous outfits for both Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Enchantress (Cara Delavigne) and some definite comedic moments for both Captain Bomerang ( Jai Courtney) and Deadshot (Will Smith).

I rate this film a 15/20.

Sing Street (2016)

This film is set in the 1980s in Dublin when a boy tries to impress a girl so he does it in the way he could think in that moment, starting a band and asking her to be in the music video. The original songs which were written for the band 'Sing Street' such as "Drive it like you stole it" and "Brown shoes" are really quite representative of the synth futuristic genre of the 80s including Joe Jackson, Pet Shop boys, Spandau Ballet and Duran. With actors like Jack Reynor and Aidan Gellen playing minor roles to unknown amazing actors such as Ferdia Walsh-Peelo and Mark McKenna it really increases the vulnerability of the plot however, it is only vulnerable for the first 5 minutes and then it gains its confidence as does most of the films which are directed by John Carney such as begin Again and Once.

I rate this film a 18/20.
